We Shall Not Despair is a game about rising up against the big corps that have been making everyday life worse for the average citizen.

Controls

  • WASD or Arrow Keys to move.
  • Spacebar or X to jump.
  • E to continue dialogue or activate dialogue whenever prompted.
  • Q to skip to the end of a given dialogue.
  • F to punch/sabotage (as needed)

I would advise you to read through the dialogue and exposition in the game as that sets most of the theme and also provides some tips for the controls.

Note: The appearance of your character is chosen at random from 18 possible appearances.Shift+R will let you reload your character and randomise their appearance.

Another note: Only one of the three planned platformer levels have been implemented. I apologise for the misleading overworld in advance.

Yet another note: Please do not press the punch key while moving, it will cause unexpected and unhandled effects.

Thank you for playing my game!

a game where I can punch down on data centers and fight the dooming despair of late-stage capitalism through the power of collective action?
say no more.

Love the intro, overworld map, and level selection! Also, the music and sounds fit soo well :) And as others mentioned, the random character generation works really well and is such a cool feature ~

Hope it's oki if I also write some ideas for improvement:
- falling down seems to lock one out of the game sometimes (no respawn)
- before the goal, falling down into the fire makes it impossible to get back up and results in a slow and painful death ðŸ˜ if that was on purpose, you managed to capture despair quite well on multiple levels!
- some of the projectile-shooting enemies are a bit frustrating because the projectiles are so close together, making jumping between them very difficult right from the start

Hope to see more of it :D

Thank you for your kind words and for playing the game!!

For the ideas:

1. I wasn't aware of that! I should fix it. Thank you!

2. That one is intentional xD

3. Yeah I wanted to fine-tune the delays between the projectiles while still keeping them difficult to an extent, but never found the time to do it. Decided to just compensate with hearts the player can collect xD but yes! also something to work on in the future.

Thank you again. Idk if I will continue work on it but if I do I'll definitely keep these in mind :D

Very cute game, the idea is so uplifting despite the theme, which is exactly what we need more in the world! I didn't get very far because I am extremely bad at platformers :(  I loved the randomized character mechanic though -- very cool!

Thank you!! Aw I'm sorry  about the thing with platformers :(

I did make the game on the difficult end, so that's also on me! I'll try to make the newer levels (if I do make them) non-platformers maybe! You gave me a good idea! :D

Weeeow love how you interpreted the theme of despair! Honestly, extremely relevant to current-day topics and worries. This imagination of how to act against them is sweet and nearly radical at the same time. Perfect :D

Thank you Tan! I really wanted to use concept of fighting against despair somehow, as it was basically the only thing that came to my mind when I heard the theme.

Glad you liked it! :D
